Once upon a time, having a website was
considered to be fancy and websites were a luxury. However, today it
is necessary to own a website. Most businesses today have websites.
Many people relate to business because of their websites.
Having a website today is a compulsory
thing. The first step to owning a website is registering a domain
name. This may seem like an easy task but there are certain things
that you need to take care of while doing so.
1. Cover the bases: If you are
registering a domain name, then it makes sense to register as many
extensions of that name as you can. For example, if you register
only mybusinessdomain.com, there could be some other company that
registers mybusinessdomain.org. This could lead to serious
competition that could have been avoided if you had registered all
the extensions.
2. Park them together: If you have
a name with different extensions or if you register many names at
once, then it makes sense to park them together with just one
service provider. This will make it easy to organize and control
them.
3. Don't get tied down: If there is
only one domain name extension available for the name you want, then
it means that the other extensions are already booked. This means
that your website is not the only one with that name. Hence, it
makes sense to look for other variations of that name rather than
just registering the one name extension that is available.
4. Cast the net wide: While
registering, it is good to think what you would be doing in the
future. Would you be only doing what you are doing now or would you
like to expand your business as well. Do not choose a name that
defines your business too narrowly. This will make it difficult to
expand your business with the same name in the future.
5. Keep it short: Keeping the
domain name short will make it easier for people to recall it and
there will be lesser chances of people misspelling it.
6. Do not use hyphens unless it is
necessary. While remembering your domain name, people will not
remember the spelling along with the hyphen and this could affect
the name and the business.
7. Keywords are important but that
does not mean that you fill your domain name with keywords. Having a
keyword will not ensure that your website will start ranking among
search engines. It makes sense to have keywords only if the keyword
reflects your business. However, websites can also do well if there
are no keywords in the domain name.
8. You can use letters, numbers and
dashes. However, you cannot use special characters like #, $, ^ etc.
You can use capital letters as well.
9. Avoid names with established
brand names. This could lead to trademark issues and put you in
trouble.
10. Always
keep your website updated. If your contact information changes, make
sure to update the same on the website. Also remember the renewal
dates of your
domain name
and renew it on time.
Most businesses when they start up
pick the domain name for their website and concentrate on getting it
built. What's wrong with that I hear you say. Well absolutely
nothing if you are a small business looking to trade online right
now but think 1 or 2 years down the line.
You want your business to grow and
hopefully you'll be doing a roaring trade online in a couple of
years. Your brand is everything to your business. It's like your
electronic shop front. People should recognise it, associate it with
you and your products or service, and even try to locate you by it.
When registering a domain name initially, all businesses are well
advised to make sure that they can get their brand as their domain
name.
It makes sense as a lot of internet
users will have a bash at sticking a.com or.co.uk on the end of your
brand and seeing where it gets them. If you haven't already
established a brand, this is something worth thinking about also
when coming up with one. So what happens when you have a brand, you
have your domain name, but then someone else sneakily uses your
brand as part of their domain?
Buying as many versions of your
domain as possible like the my-company-name hyphenated version as
well as the mycompanyname version is a good start. But if you take
it one step further and get the.info.co.org and any others you can
find you are well and truly locking your companys name into the
internet yourself. None of your competitors can get at it now.
Domains range from about £1.99 to £15.00 and if you spend £100 on
lots of them now you'll never have to worry about losing them in the
future. As an added level of security you can register your domain
name, as well as your brand, as a trademark, but being a web
company, we're not in much of a position to go throwing legal advice
around.
What we can say is that you should
be vigilant about the use of your brand by others, particularly
where domains are concerned. Cybersquatting, as it is popularly
known, sees unscrupulous characters using your brand in their domain
name, or using a mis-spelled version of your domain name in order to
divert traffic away from you, and towards them. Take action now to
avoid future battles with cybersquatters!
Having an internet presence is almost
mandatory for businesses nowadays. Most companies trying to expand
should definitely look towards the web to help make it happen. Even
small local operations could benefit greatly because the internet
provides the cheapest way to reach the most people. The first step
is going to be registering a domain, and it helps if the site you
register with also has hosting options available too. Where you go
from there though will depend entirely on your budget.
To be clear, the first step is also
going to be the cheapest part of your expansion campaign. It's no
secret that domain names are inexpensive too. In fact, a lot of
people buy up names not expecting to use them but rather expecting
to sell them to people that might use them in the future. You could
save money by jumping on the name you want right away, if it's not
already taken that is. Most of the time, the name is purchased for a
whole year too, making the price almost negligible over that time
period. Therefore you should register as soon as possible even if
you're not sure what you're going to do with it.
Why do you
need a domain name anyway? Contrary to what many people think, web
sites aren't located at the addresses they type into their browsers.
For example, "
http://www.amazon.com
" can't actually direct you to Amazon's web site. Web sites are
located at their IP addresses, which are long numbers that humans
would find hard to memorize. When you type "
http://www.amazon.com
" into your browser, that name is sent to a name translation service
behind the scenes that converts that name into the appropriate IP
address. Therefore, when you register a name for your web site,
you're essentially registering for that translation service too.
You'd be doing the prep work that would allow your site to be easily
navigated to in the future.
A domain name isn't everything
though. The translation service will help people get to your site,
but what will they see when they get there? Your web site needs to
have content to offer. Most growing businesses can hire a small web
development firm to create a simple site for them that will instill
trust into potential customers. The site could feature information
about the company, its mission statement, product advertisements
with pictures and video, maps, directions, and maybe even an online
store. It's really up to you, but know that having something is a
lot better than having nothing at all. The mere fact that you have a
website to go to with some basic information there will give your
business much more credibility.
Once you have content for your
website, you need to get hosting. When you purchase a hosting
service, you're essentially purchasing a place to put your website
content online. The hosting will also serve the content to the
people that visit your site. Fortunately, this service can be
bundled with your domain name purchase. For most businesses, signing
up for both at the same time offers the best balance of pricing and
convenience.
In the excitement of starting your new
online business there are many things to consider. Amid the
multitude of tasks, one very important decision is choosing your
domain name for your new website. This is most people's first
introduction to your business and so it needs to be given plenty of
thought.So what important
things do you need to pay attention to when choosing your domain
name for your online business? Well, it's best if your site name is
easy to remember and tells people what your site is about. It can be
good fun choosing a name, brainstorming and listing all the names
you would like and that you think would be appropriate for your
site.
The frustrating bit can be when you
are excitedly thinking that you have found the perfect name to your
website, only to discover when you check it out, that the domain
name you decided was perfect for you is already taken. However, with
a little time and patience, you will come up with a domain name that
you think fits for you and your website. The next step is to run it
past the few friends or colleagues to get their feedback. There may
be implications to your name choice which you hadn't noticed. If you
don't check with other people, then at least sit with it for a few
days, while you see how well this name would really work for you.
It's also a good idea to check out
any sites with similar names. There could possibly be some advantage
to your site for it to have a name similar to a well-known site. You
might get some traffic from people who haven't quite remembered the
name accurately and have inadvertently landed on your site instead
of the one they thought they wanted.
However, you would not want to be
associated with any sites of a dubious nature, which have a similar
name to your site. A friend of mine, when setting up a website about
angels, the fluffy beings of love and light who she believes assist
us, was horrified to find that sites with similar names to the one
she had chosen were what are politely termed 'adult sites'. Not what
she would want to be confused with.
When choosing a domain name, it's
very helpful if you can focus on what your online business is about
and come up with a domain name which incorporates your major
keywords. It's not always possible, especially if you're in a busy
market, where most of the obvious ones have been taken, but with a
bit of flexible thinking, you can come up with a winner for
yourself.
One point to bear in mind is that
search engines such as Google currently favour a website whose name
includes the site's keywords. Your search engine rankings could be
improved if you can do the same. A defining question to ask yourself
when choosing your domain name, is 'Does this name tell people what
my online business is about?' if so, you're on the right lines.
Your first goal is to get visitors
to your site and, once they are regulars, you want them to be able
to remember your domain name and to type it into their browser
easily. Consequently, choosing a domain name that is simple and easy
to remember will be beneficial to your business, assisting you in
building your brand.
Time spent considering this and
choosing your domain name with care is time well spent for your
online marketing business. Have fun with the process.

Understanding the Principles of Domain

You might be completely on top of your
game when it comes to your business, yet still have a lot of
questions about the internet side of things. Such a dichotomy is not
all that bizarre in a world that has only been taken over by the
internet in the last ten years. Hearing Larry King mention Facebook

he has no idea what he's talking about. You should know the basics
about domain names and

Getting the Perfect Domain Name for Your
Creative Endeavors

Henry Cook
These days, people are developing
their online presences in a variety of different fields. Rather than
web designers and programmers being the only people to work on
personal pages, everyone from bands and DJs to aspiring chefs and
artists are starting to see the importance of a presence on the
world wide web. And while those with creative endeavors might have
once been contented to stick with free services like Tumblr, true
professionals know that someone checking out a site is going to
notice the difference in domains between a .com with a single
address and a more convoluted URL.
The Many Reasons for Registering Your
Own Domain
by
Henry Cook
The internet has an ever-greater
presence in our lives and impact on them: that's just the reality of
living in the 21st century. It is nigh on impossible for any serious
working-age professional these days to avoid constant online
activity, and when it comes to personal use of the web levels of
activity also remain incredible high. In this overall context, it
becomes increasingly important for people of various ages to advance
their knowledge of how the internet actually works and how they can
harness the power of the web for personal/professional ends-and for
many people that means eventually registering a domain for one
reason or another. It is something that more and more people are
doing, often with excellent results, and it is a trend that we would
like to explore in a little detail below...
Choosing the Right Domain Name to
Increase Traffic For Your Business
by
Henry Cook
For those more comfortable with the
old-school model for business, getting accustomed to figuring out
one's approach online might seem overwhelming at first. After all,
now it's important to think in terms of different bottom lines and a
completely foreign landscape, where consumers are looking for
representation of a brand without necessarily wanting to make a
purchase. And because of this, a website is partial advertisement
and partial virtual storefront, something that should engage users
while also making it easy to access the information desired. And
part of that hugely important first impression, aside from the
appearance, is selecting the proper domain name.

The last phrase in the title above
is known to be a misquote of a line from Joseph Addison's 1712
tragedy about the famous Roman statesman of the same name, "Cato";
but it could just as easily be a corollary of Murphy's famous law:
"What can go wrong, will go wrong!"
If you think you've found the
perfect domain name for your business and it hasn't been
registered yet, don't hesitate--buy It! If you're old enough to
have a credit card you should know by now that the moment you find
something you want somebody else is going to come along and get it
if you hesitate. It might not be logical to assume that a domain
name that has been waiting in the weeds all these years for you to
come along and find it will suddenly have several suitors, but
logic isn't all that it's cracked up to be; sometime you gotta go
with your heart.
This law still applies today even
in a product as oversold as real estate. Realtors try to convince
buyers to buy if they think they've found the house of their
dreams and buyers still hesitate believing that the house has been
on the market for six months, so what's the hurry?...and lose the
house. Ask any Realtor; it happens all the time.
These days there are a whole lot
fewer people buying real estate than domain names, particularly
dot-coms. Eighty million plus dot-com names have been sold and
every day there are thousands--possibly millions--of people
searching through the available databases hoping to snag a certain
dot-com before somebody else does. If you want to take the chance
that one of those people won't stumble over the one you want, go
ahead, but don't be surprised if you find yourself searching for
another one sooner than you expected.

If you use the internet or own a
website, you probably already know what cheap domain names domain
are. When you type a certain name with a dot com, dot net, or dot
org, etc. Then you know what it is although you may not have any
idea about it. Usually people will know about certain things if
they are interested in them.
When people start considering
building a website, the first thing they do is to find out what
they are going to be selling or offering the public. Then
depending on those factors, they are able to come up with a name
for their website. In most cases, business owners will get a name
that explains what their site is about.
The name that they choose will be
what they are known for online, when people browse the internet
for goods and services they are offering, if they did a good job
naming their website, they will be on to of the charts.
Therefore, it is important to
name your website wisely as this could be the determining factor
as to whether you make it or not. It can be a cheap or expensive
name that does not really matter.
What matters is the name you wish
to call your site, is it easy for people to find or remember? Does
your domain name tell people what your site is about? If not, then
you might be wasting your time.
The name will only become valid
when it is registered by domain registrars that register online
names then reassign them to other people. When you pick a name, it
is automatically given to you if it does not belong to anybody
else, you pay and get it. You will probably own it for the whole
year.
The other thing you would want to
do is to pick a company that will host your website or you may do
it all by yourself if you know something about web hosting. If you
happen to choose a web hosting company, it has to available to you
whenever you need help with your problems daily.
There are plenty of options for
cheap domain names available to choose from, starting from as low
as two dollars per month. You may pick whichever is good for your
business but make sure that company is available to answer your
questions every day and throughout the year if you choose to stay
with them or if they are good enough for you.

Choosing your Domain Name.
Getting the right domain name is
really important. Here are a few tips to make sure you get it
right first time and your customers can always remember you.
Let's break up a domain to start
with.
There are three main components
that make up a domain name.
1 WWW,
2 YourNameHere,
3 TLD
1. www or not to www?
As you may know www merely stands for World Wide Web. This is a
section of the Internet that is used for hypertext transfer
documents i.e. websites. When someone types your domain name into
their browser it goes off to find out what the IP address is for
address. With the IP address the browser now knows where your
website is hosted and can go to the web server that hosts your
website to request the relevant page. So why do some websites show
www and some not? By using the www part of the domain the server
administrator can send your browser to an IP address different to
your website if they preferred. I prefer to keep the address bar
as clear and short as possible so remove the www from the address.
2. Domain names.
These need to be memorable, preferably short and easy to spell. I
chose WebDO as it's only five characters, it sums up what I do and
DO are my initials. This part of your name has to be unique which
now means it's quite hard to get short domains. The important
thing to remember is you can't have spaces so domains end up as
one big word unless you use hyphens. A note of caution. The lack
of spaces in websites can lead to embarrassing names. The good
people of Penistone, South Yorkshire need to be careful when
choosing theirs so as not to fall foul of adult content filtering!
You have been warned.
3. TLD? Is this
the latest boyband to be discovered on The X-Factor? No it stands
for Top Level Domain. This is the last part of your domain name.
Think about your market before you choose this part. If you
operate solely in the UK then.co.uk immediately lets your
customers know that you're UK based. If you're a charity or
not-for-profit think about using.org or.org.uk. If you're aiming
for global domination the.com and.net should be on your list. If
you want to protect your brand identity closely then you'll need
to register lots of different TLDs. Don't panic, you don't need a
separate website for each one. You can point them towards your
existing site so you only need manage one site. The last thing you
need to know about domain names is that you never actually own
them. You merely lease the right to use them for a period of time.
You tend to register.co.uk for periods of two years and.com for
periods on one year. At the end of this registration period you
will need to renew your registration or your domain will be
released and someone else could easily register it. Make sure your
host will remind you that your renewal is coming up to avoid
losing your name as there are domain harvesters who snap up
recently expired domains in the hope of selling them back to the
original owner for a hefty profit or they might point your old
domain name to their website to pickup some of your traffic. Even
worse some of the websites they point your customers to can be
categorised as adults only.
So to sum up:
Try to keep it short, simple,
easy to spell, easy to remember, and targeted to your audience.

The business of buying and selling
domain names is definitely one of the most appealing money making
opportunities available online. A lot of names have been sold for
thousands of dollars; some are even sold at six and seven-figure
so you can make some serious money if you can get your hands on
the right domain. To help you understand the business better, let
us take a look at some of the important factors of buying and
selling website names.
Domains that represent certain niche and generic domains are
priced at higher level. It is only natural that people running car
dealer want to have popular names such as car-dealer.com as
theirs; it will attract more businesses and customers, and that is
exactly why they are spending thousands of dollars for the website
name. Generic names give owners the boost of image to their
business, implying that their business is the best in that
particular niche.
If seeking generic domains for
international top level domain such as.com and.net a bit too
difficult or too expensive for you, you may want to consider
localized names instead. People running online businesses in
Canada are interested at localized.ca domain names because they
attract visitors from the right target market. If you can,
register.ca domain with generic names and offer them to local
businesses. The same thing goes to other geographic areas as well.
Once you get sellable names, make
sure you list them for sale. Park the names you have acquired and
state clearly that each of the domain names is for sale. You can
also list the name you are selling at several directories
available online. It will make people aware that the domain is for
sale, and interested customers will give you valuable offers.
Once you get several potential
names, you will realize the profit potential of this business for
sure. Start seeking for potential names right now and contact a
reliable registrar to park the domain for sale. Besides, domain
hunting is definitely exciting on its own.

Is your major source of traffic
going to be organic search results or even pay per click (PPC)
campaigns? Then it makes sense to focus your domain name on the
main keyword you targeted when researching your niche.
For one, the domain name has an
impact on telling the search engines what your site is about. A
keyword focused domain name makes ranking in your target niche a
whole lot easier.
Second, search query terms will
appear bold in the Google Search Network. So your websites URL
will be easier to distinguish from the competition. Also, it will
show your potential visitors before the click that you offer what
they are looking for.
However, buying a short tail
domain name, consisting of merely one to two words, can be
difficult.
A lot of top keyword focused
domain names are already in use, many are parked, and some are
being auctioned off for more than you might be willing to pay.
Don't be afraid of long tail
phrases when buying domain names. Too generic short tail phrases
are likely to attract too large of a demographic.
Make sure you get both the
hyphenated and non-hyphenated version when buying domain names.
For long tail keyword phrases it is best to direct traffic to the
hyphenated version of your domain. These are easier to read for
both humans and search engines. Redirect any secondary domain
names you buy with a 301 Permanent Redirect to your primary
domain. This saves you from generating duplicate content.
For offline branding purposes you
may want to consider buying a shorter, if necessary less keyword
focused domain name that will be easier for potential customers to
remember.
Buying Top Level Domains
I recommend using the .com
extension for most online purposes. The .com top level domain (TLD)
is recognized and remembered by most people as the default and
legitimate web extension.
You may also want to consider
buying the .net TLD web extension. However, I do not suggest only
buying domain names ending in .net. Why? Simple. If someone else
buys or owns the matching .com domain you may end up loosing
visitors to them because people mistook their .com for you.
The .info TLD may sound
interesting for certain business models. And with their low
prices, buying domain names ending in .info can be very
attractive. Still there is a very small problem with buying these
domain names. Let me ask you a question. When was the last time
you saw an .info TLD listed in a search engine result? The answer
is rarely. The reason you don't see them any more, they were
greatly misused by scammers and have since acquired a bad
reputation.
Don't worry though, with a little
creativity buying domain names can be fun. Some examples of
services that use more exotic extensions to build their brand are
bit.ly and del.icio.us to name a few. It is important to note that
most of these sites buy the matching domain name with .com
extension, too.
To conclude, buying domain names
is often the first hurdle you face when you decide to start your
online business. Because buying the wrong domain name can make or
break your business it is important to get it right at the
beginning. Once you have bought the right domain name the rest of
the pieces fall into place easier, and your marketing efforts will
be more effective.

As a business owner myself, I cringe
whenever I see other business owners - for both online and
"brick-and-mortar" businesses - use the free email and website
hosting supplied by their Internet service provider (ISP). I am
sure you have come across such businesses yourself, ones that do
not have their own domain name but rather use that of their ISP,
often their cable or phone company. But these business owners do
not realize that they are making a big mistake by not getting and
using their very own domain name.
There are two major problems with a
business that does not have its own domain name. The first is an
issue of control and flexibility, the second has to do with
branding and long-term marketability.
ISPs love it when you use the
free email and hosting services they supply. It hardly costs them
anything to support those services and it is an easy way to
discourage you from switching to a different ISP.
Think about it: if you have your
ISP-supplied email address plastered over all of your business
cards, you will hesitate to switch to a different ISP, because you
will have to abandon the old email address as part of the process.
The ISP effectively holds you hostage because you are using
something they control - their domain name - as part of your
business operations. Not the best place to be, really.
If, on the other hand, you have
your own domain name, you can switch ISPs whenever you want with
only minor disruption to your business operations.
Branding is perhaps the biggest
problem when it comes to not owning your own domain name. You
spent a lot of time choosing the perfect name for your business.
So why do you not control the online version of the same name?
Your own domain name is a
powerful marketing tool. For one thing, it makes your business
seem bigger than a hobby business run out of someone's house, even
if that is really what it is. It also makes it easier for your
customers to remember and find you. And search engines will be
able to place your business on their maps and provide all kinds of
useful information - your phone number, fax number, email address
- with hardly any effort on your part.
Registering and using a domain
name is a lot easier than you think it is. You can register a
domain name for around $10. You can host the domain almost
anywhere for less than $10/month, which includes multiple email
accounts and a website. Cost is definitely not the issue here.
If you are serious about your business, get yourself a
domain name and start using it immediately. Your business
will only benefit. The
Find Me A Domain
software tool can help you with your
domain names search.
Use it to find the perfect domain name for your business.
